Some people recoil in terror at one of the most harmless creatures in nature. This garter snake could not harm you if it wanted to. It has no fangs, no venom. It’s jaws are most likely not strong enough to break the skin should it bite, which it won’t unless you try to pick it up.

When it’s cold, a garter snake will often curl up in your hand, perfectly content to absorb your body heat if you do pick one up.

But, the best course of action when dealing with snakes is the same as with any wild creature: Leave it alone.

Yes, even if it’s a rattlesnake, just leave it be. It won’t hurt you if you keep your distance, and it’s a part of the natural ecosystem. It belongs in the woods.
